Quality & Standards
At Cygnus Lumber & Millworks, quality is the foundation of everything we supply, from rough hardwood lumber to finished millwork and custom profiles. Our commitment is to deliver premium, consistently graded wood products that meet the expectations of builders, architects, designers, and craftsmen.
Quality and consistency are critical to project success. Proper grading, moisture control, and craftsmanship ensure that lumber performs reliably, installs cleanly, and maintains its appearance over time. Our standards are designed to give customers confidence in every order, regardless of scale or complexity.
Lumber Grading Systems
Lumber grading is a standardised method used to evaluate wood quality, appearance, and usable yield. It provides a common language that allows buyers to select material appropriate for both structural and aesthetic requirements.
For hardwood lumber, Cygnus Lumber & Millworks follows the National Hardwood Lumber Association (NHLA) grading rules, the industry standard across North America.
Key Hardwood Grades Explained
FAS (Firsts and Seconds)
The highest standard hardwood grade, offering the greatest percentage of clear, defect-free wood. Commonly used for fine furniture, cabinetry, and high-end millwork.
FAS One Face (FAS 1F)
Selects
The highest standard hardwood grade, offering the greatest percentage of clear, defect-free wood. Commonly used for fine furniture, cabinetry, and high-end millwork.
No. 1 Common
The highest standard hardwood grade, offering the greatest percentage of clear, defect-free wood. Commonly used for fine furniture, cabinetry, and high-end millwork.
No. 2 Common
The highest standard hardwood grade, offering the greatest percentage of clear, defect-free wood. Commonly used for fine furniture, cabinetry, and high-end millwork.
Grading is based on factors such as clear wood yield, allowable defects, board size, and cutting yield, ensuring transparency and consistency across orders.
Hardwood Quality Assurance
Every hardwood product supplied by Cygnus Lumber & Millworks undergoes a structured quality assurance process to ensure reliability and performance.
Our quality controls include:
- Visual inspection for grain consistency, colour variation, and surface defects
- Mechanical checks for straightness, thickness accuracy, and uniformity
- Moisture control practices to promote dimensional stability and long-term durability
- Verification of grading accuracy before material is released for order fulfilment
These steps help minimise waste, improve workability, and ensure predictable results during fabrication and installation.
Millwork Quality Standards
Our millwork standards focus on:
- Skilled craftsmanship and attention to detail
- Precision tooling for consistent profiles and clean edges
- Custom profile matching for existing or historical trim
- Tight tolerances to ensure proper fit and alignment
- Quality-controlled priming and finishing processes
These steps help minimise waste, improve workability, and ensure predictable results during fabrication and installation.
Sustainable Sourcing & Certifications
Where applicable, our sourcing aligns with recognised programs and certifications such as:
- Virginia Tree Farm Foundation participation
- Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) certification options
Environmental stewardship is treated as a core quality principle, ensuring that premium lumber products are sourced with respect for forest ecosystems and future availability.
