Quality & Standards

Quality & Standards

At Cygnus Lumber & Millworks, quality is the foundation of everything we supply, from rough hardwood lumber to finished millwork and custom profiles. Quality and consistency are critical to project success. Our standards are designed to give customers confidence in every order, regardless of scale or complexity.

Lumber grading is a standardised method used to evaluate wood quality, appearance, and usable yield. For hardwood lumber, Cygnus Lumber & Millworks follows the National Hardwood Lumber Association (NHLA) grading rules, the industry standard across North America.

Lumber Grading Systems

Lumber grading is a standardised method used to evaluate wood quality, appearance, and usable yield. It provides a common language that allows buyers to select material appropriate for both structural and aesthetic requirements.

For hardwood lumber, Cygnus Lumber & Millworks follows the National Hardwood Lumber Association (NHLA) grading rules, the industry standard across North America.

Key Hardwood Grades Explained

Superior Grade.
This applies primarily to walnut lumber. This grade is sorted for color to minimize sap wood content, clarity of the boards without knots and widths over 5”. There is typically a $3-$4/bf premium on this grade given the high demand and growing scarcity of the material.
The highest standard hardwood grade, offering the greatest percentage of clear, defect-free wood. Commonly used for fine furniture, cabinetry, and high-end millwork.
This grade requires the “best face” of the board to meet FAS standards, while the back face meets the No. 1 Common grade. It is the perfect, cost-effective choice for projects where only one side of the wood will be visible, such as tabletops, drawer fronts, or wall paneling.
Very similar to FAS One Face, but this grade allows for slightly narrower and shorter boards. It provides excellent, high-quality clear wood for projects that require a premium finish but don’t need the larger overall board dimensions of FAS.
Often referred to as the “Cabinet Grade,” this offers a fantastic balance of clear wood and value. It yields slightly smaller clear cuttings than FAS and is the standard, go-to choice for kitchen cabinets, standard furniture, and everyday woodworking projects.
Also known as the “Economy” or “Rustic” grade, these boards feature more natural character, including knots and grain variations. It is highly cost-effective and ideal for hardwood flooring, rustic furniture builds, or smaller craft projects where shorter clear cuttings are acceptable.

Grading is based on factors such as clear wood yield, allowable defects, board size, and cutting yield, ensuring transparency and consistency across orders.
